Who this is for
This is another joint club trip run by Hunting Guide Phil Wilson for Central Otago, Upper Clutha, and Southern Lakes branches.
It is aimed at NZDA members of all skills level, you can still join if you are waiting for your licence to arrive and will be paired up with someone else
Meet Friday night at Ferintosh Shearers Quarters on the Private Station which on the way to Mt Cook, Hunt on Saturday, and Sunday and leave Monday.
Once we have confirmed numbers, we will do a briefing on the Wed 28th May at 8pm via zoom and car pool options can be discussed.

Cost
3 nights $145 pp (kids under 12 $60)*
2 nights $ 115pp (kids under 12 $50)*
This covers the accommodation and the hire of longer range radios for safety.
Max of 16 spots available
*There is the option to add children under 12 in your registration form
Children over 12 will need to pay adult price and be registered separately (if they do not have their own log in register yourself again and include the child in the comments) - or just email if too complicated :-)
Station accommodation
We are staying in the shearers quarters - there is generator power
Staying in bunk room huts. There is a Lounge / kitchen and 1 shower and toilet.
You can drive your car to front door and sight in rifles right there.
Directions
Mount Cook Road (State Highway 80) , Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, before Aoraki Mt Cook Village
To find, 9km on right from Peters lookout, a road cone will be at drive. Turn up here
Full directions and details will be discussed at the zoom safety briefing on the Wed night before at 8pm
Friday night
Arrive Friday evening
8:30 pm-ish Short 30 minute briefing on tahr hunting and equipment required and conditions expected to be encountered
9:00 Safety Briefing, Depending on the forecast, the weather will play a big factor in this.
9:40 Hunting groups and areas to be allocated
9:45 Chill and plan with your allocated hunting group.
Saturday
There will be a class room session in the morning about Tahr and how to hunt them. Tahr are active early and again just before sunset so take enough food and warm clothing to nap for a few hours on the hill before late afternoon/ early evening hunting. Bring head torches as it is likely you will be returning in the dark
Return to Lodge Saturday evening
Sunday
Hunting again and weather dependant we can swap the classroom session round
Monday
Those super keen can head out again otherwise late breakfast, enjoy Mt Cook or go fishing in the canals and then return home
What to bring
- Sleeping bag & pillow (luxury car camping!)
- Earplugs
- Food
- Beer - there is an opportunity to have a few on the Saturday & Sunday night when you get back
- Rifle and ammo (if you need to borrow a rifle - let us know)
- Binos and range finder if you have them (bring spares for the newbies coming if you have some)
- Hunting clothes - A more detailed list will be discussed at the briefing nearer the time
- Emergency gear (first aid, emergency beacon if you have one)
- Toiletries and towel (there are showers)
We will bring radios and PLBs but if you have your own that is great
Ensure rifles are sighted in and you have a DoC Canterbury region open hunting permit for the area
Note: it will be Alpine Autumn /Winter conditions so make sure you have the right gear and clothing if unsure please ask.
Getting there
We can try and car pool - we will cover this on the Wed night at the Zoom briefing
NB There is VERY limited cover at the lodge so you may be out of coverage most of the weekend however if family need to contact you in a hurry the lodge will be able to pass a message on .

You will need to be a fully paid up NZDA member to attend this weekend.
Please note the trip will still go ahead if rain is forecast as often the weather clears enough to get out and hunt at some point. Delicate soft types not wanting to get wet will not be refunded unless the weather is a safety issue.
