THEME OF MEETING
Glen Thurston, founder of MentalHunts, will be joining us for a special presentation at our next Southern Lakes Deerstalkers meeting.
Breaking down mental health barriers within the hunting community. MentalHunts is geared towards providing both education and inspiration for anyone in the firearms community. Presently, there exists a significant barrier for individuals in these communities to seek mental health assistance due to the fear of revocation of their firearms license.
This issue hits close to home for Glen, as he personally experienced the revocation of his firearms license on October 2019, simply for seeking help during a challenging period. We want to encourage people to not only speak up if they are struggling but also get into nature to reap all the benefits it has to offer.
Glen is a dedicated father, skilled builder, and a passionate advocate for mental health, particularly within the hunting and construction communities. Having faced his own battles with depression and adversity, he has become a powerful voice in raising awareness and fostering open conversations about mental well-being.
As part of his mission, Glen created the "Turn the Corner" challenge—climbing Corner Peak 53 times in 53 days—to bring attention to the devastating impact of suicide within the construction industry. His advocacy work continues to push for better support systems for hunters and firearms license holders dealing with mental health challenges.
This is a unique opportunity to hear from someone who truly understands the struggles many in our community face. We encourage all members to come along, listen to Glen’s journey, and learn how we can support one another in both hunting and life.
