Who this is for

This is aimed at NZDA members of all skill level - we try and team new hunters (and those still waiting on their licence) with experienced members and it is a great opportunity to meet other members of the club.

The basic plan is to meet at Ferintosh Station which on the way to Mt Cook on the Friday night, hunt on Saturday and leave on the Sunday

Once we have confirmed numbers, we will have a briefing session on the Wednesday before and car pool options will be available

There will be a cost $160 pp for the 3 nights accommodation. The club will pay for the hire of long range radios for safety.

Station accommodation

We are staying in the shearers quarters - there is generator power

Staying in bunk room huts. There is a lounge / kitchen and 1 shower and toilet.
You can drive your car to the front door and sight in rifles right there.

Directions
Head to the Mount Cook Road (State Highway 80), Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, we are some way before Aoraki Mt Cook Village

To find, it is 9km on the right from Peters lookout, a road cone will be at the drive. Turn up here
Full directions and packing details will also come out the week before the trip, if you register late (Ie the day before) then you will have to ask for this to be sent to you.

Friday night

Arrive Friday

8 pm-ish Briefing on tahr hunting and equipment required and conditions expected to be encountered
9:00pm  Safety Briefing,  Depending on the forecast, the weather will play a big factor in this.
9:40pm  Hunting groups and areas to be allocated
9:45pm  Chill and plan with your allocated hunting group members.

Saturday & Sunday

7am Breakfast

For those who are confident and do not want to attend the information session you will be free to head away early.

For those wanting to learn more:

There will be a class room session in the morning on Saturday about Tahr and how to hunt them.
Lunch at Noon then head on out.
Tahr are active early and again just before sunset so take enough food and warm clothing to nap for a few hours on the hill before late afternoon/ early evening hunting. Bring head torches as it is likely you will be returning in the dark

We will return to the Lodge each evening evening

Labour Day Monday

Those super keen can head out again otherwise late breakfast, enjoy Mt Cook or go fishing in the canals and then return home

What to bring

  • Sleeping bag & pillow (luxury car camping!)
  • Earplugs

T&Cs

You will need to be a fully paid up NZDA member to attend this weekend. We will share the spaces with the Alexandra club and Upper Clutha Branch

Please note the trip will still go ahead if rain is forecast as often the weather clears enough to get out and hunt at some point.  "Delicate softies" not wanting to get wet will not be refunded unless the weather is a safety issue.
