Guest Speaker - Paul Roy who directed and produced the podcast "Deer Wars"
Paul Roy is a veteran filmmaker from Wānaka, New Zealand, with nearly 40 years of experience. Renowned as a producer, director, cinematographer, and writer, he creates captivating documentaries and series featured on major networks like Al Jazeera, ABC, and Channel 4. His work spans over 40 countries, often exploring adventure, history, and resilience, with a focus on New Zealand's unique culture and environment.
Paul's recent foray into radio and podcasting includes the acclaimed nine-part series Deer Wars for RNZ, which explores New Zealand's dramatic efforts to control the red deer population through culling and helicopter meat recovery. The series, which has earned recognition at the 2024 New York Festivals Radio Awards and the NZ Radio & Podcast Awards, is a testament to his ability to translate compelling visuals into equally engaging audio storytelling.
In addition to Deer Wars, Paul directed and produced the 2007 documentary of the same name, chronicling the history of helicopter deer culling in New Zealand's Southern Alps. The film captures the hazardous yet thrilling world of heli-hunters and the risks they took to manage the environmental impact of invasive deer species. Throughout his career, Paul has been at the forefront of chronicling the human spirit's bold undertakings, whether by air, land, or microphone.
