NZDA Bow Only, Tahr hunt competition

This is a joint event with NZDA, Archery & Bowhunting NZ, with Arrowtown Opal and Jade  proud to support the event

To be held on the 30th Sept to 2nd Oct 2022 based at Ferintosh Station Shearers Quarters Mt Cook

Hunters will require a current DoC hunting permit
(Mt Cook is under the Canterbury region)

Link to permits

The 30 minute briefing will be held 7.30 pm on the 7th Oct, followed by the ballot draw and for those interested there will also be a 2 hour work shop at 2pm on the 7th run by Bow Shop owner Paddy Long and Master Guide Phil Wilson covering both the hunting bows and Tahr hunting that is included in your fee.

To secure your place sign up and register. The $185 covers the bow workshop, accommodation, access and prizes. The hunt is available to NZDA members and potential new members. Membership is extra if not a NZDA member

The hunt is limited to the first 12 hunters to sign up as there will be 6 set hunting areas to be drawn on the day,  some may require 4x4 access with chains. (If we don’t get 8 hunters the prizes maybe reduced)

The prizes include:

  •  $400 cash for the oldest tahr taken
  • $400 Archery & Bowhunting NZ voucher for the highest Douglas scoring Tahr
  • 2 custom made jade pendants by Arrowtown Opal and Jade shop for the most Tahr taken by a woman and one for the men

Outline:  any type of bow or sight can be used so long as the bow meets the DoC minimum set standard for poundage. (min 45lb)

Hunters, if you’re able, may choose to camp out on their drawn block.

Hunting can only be conducted during the hours of daylight.

Other rules will apply at the time.

Hunters will need to have their Tahr back by 4pm on the 9th to be eligible, if you choose not to enter a Tahr you may carry on hunting the rest of the day but you must notify the Coordinator Phil Wilson.

All hunters have to be out the accommodation and stop hunting by 10.30pm on the 9th Oct, this is for safety reasons.
