Reminders for All Hunters
As these items need attention every 3 or 4 months, I put the reminder out at every change of season so as it is Summer coming up it's that time again
Open area hunting permits are not only important and a requirement for the public conservation areas you hunt in, they are a good way for us to show how many hunters there are out there.

1080 Operations at the Head of the LakeThe Department of Conservation (DOC) is currently undertaking a rat and stoat control operation (1080 drops) in the Dart, Routeburn and Caples Valleys.
From the DOC email:- "This operation is part of DOC’s National Predator Control Programme and is in response to a predicted beech mast in the area this summer. If this mast occurs it will trigger a population explosion of rodents which could seriously threaten the survival of the mohua populations in these valleys, and negatively impact other native species. See the DOC fact sheet explaining operational details and the proposed map. The decision not to use deer repellent on the area was extremely disappointing and with the help of the National Office and the Game Animal Council, DOC operations have agreed to use it on the White Tail herd only. Sadly there is no repellent applied on bait to be dropped on the Caples RHA. As a branch we have submitted our disappointment as have the Upper Clutha Branch and the GAC as well as National Office. The request for data for the decisions not to use repellent is being pursued.
