Douglas Score Course

We still have a number of spaces available on the Douglas Score course next weekend.

When: 9th Oct
Time: 9am - 4.30pm
Where: 5 Mile

It was voted at the meeting that the club would pay for the cost of this for our members (normally $90pp) so if you are keen check out the website for further information

We are happy to accept more people wanting to learn but as the club is paying, we ask they make themselves available when it comes to NZDA scoring events such as the AHT (Antler, Horn and Tusk) competition in May

Mount Cook Club Tahr Hunting Trip

In the meeting it appeared there had been some confusion over the date of this trip and the dates the accommodation was booked for.

We also had 2 members organising similar trips so the committee have decided we are going to stick with the original dates (as a number of people spoke to me at the meeting and said they had taken the Friday off work and made arrangements)

There is a small change to the trip but it will work in our favour

Phil Wilson (a member and a professional hunting guide) has arranged for the club to stay on Ferintosh Station in the lodge there.

He will run this trip which is targeted for members that have not hunted much for Tahr before and for those members still waiting for their licence to come through. (We will pair you up with a licenced member to hunt together.)
We do however need some more experienced hunters to partner up with the newer members - so it's open for all

This change also means we are able to gain access through and hunt on Ferintosh Station which boarders the open Hunting area (See below, green is open hunting, pink is the station). The station was not targeted by the heli hunting recently and has a population of Tahr.

We are also joining up with the Alexandra newly formed club as they have a few members keen to go too.

Details and registration on the website.

In the News

Salomea (she was on last years HUNTS course) contacted us to say a friend had found a camera in the Caples. She sent some pictures of hunters on it and we posted them on Facebook.
Someone recognised the face and the camera was returned to the owner. It had been lost for over 10 years!

Understanding where to go hunting

Minutes from 30th Sept 2021

Apologies:-

Apologies from:- Phil Wilson, Dave Rider, Dion Halmshaw, Reeve Murdock, Ken Howie,

Minutes from last meeting:-

Due to Covid lockdown the last meeting that was due to be held at Hunting and Fishing got changed to a Zoom catch up therefore no official minutes were taken

General Correspondence In:-

  • National Newsletter received - Launch of new NZDA app - see below

General Correspondence Out:-

  • Final financial balance for conference was sent to the National Treasurer (still waiting to hear back if accepted)
  • Memberships list and caps payments sent to head office

Presidents Update:-

  • Sharon, Al and Andy attended a 2 hour meeting with the local DOC office on Wed 29th Sept to meet the new manager David Butt and Lisa Thurlow  - very positive meeting and lots discussed: meeting notes below

Minutes from Hunter liaison DOC meeting 29th Sept 2021

Present from NZDA: Andy Pearson (President), Al Gay (vice President) and Sharon Salmons (Secretary)
From DOC Lisa Thurlow, David Butt and Pat (sorry I forgot to get his last name)

1. General conversation at the start was who we were and how we got involved and that hunting has has such a bad rep the last few years however most members were conservationists and share the same values. There is a need for positive PR and promotion that the club is a good partner of the work  DOC undertake.

Sharon highlighted that the current Conservation Minister was keen to involve hunters and encourage more (through education and the GAC) so an exciting time at the moment.

2. The agreement for the trapline and work we do in the Greenstone is nearly finished, Pheobe has been working with Simon Brackstone. Items amended include ballot periods allocated, year round and increased heli landings, pest control work (possums) and stoat traps

There was a new trap line going in the Greenstone and a new person had been recruited to manage this. The club is really keen to touch base with them and talk to them about monitoring the facilites at our hut (ex wardens quarters)

3. Tia Kina Nga Manu - Battle for our birds

Due to warmer weather the masts are becoming more frequent and therefore 1080 work was completed as a result in 2014, 2016 and 2019

It is tracking to be another year where operations required in Autumn 2022

Pat offered to talk/ educate about the reasons for operations at the club meeting - date to be confirmed.

Whilst no one likes the use of 1080, we accept this is the only tool available at the moment. However should it be required, the club would like to recommend that repellent is used for the vulnerable herds in the Dart, Caples and Greenstone and Blue Mountains.

Further information on the tracking rates and concentration of pellets would also be great to know

We asked about resetting traps and the advice was given that they need to be kea proof and then do not work as effectively on stoats. Some work still to be done to replace the current traps and the placements etc - so will work with DOC on that, We are planning on heading in Nov

4. We discussed the heli landing rights in the RHA and it was thought the monopoly for Glacier Southern Lakes now that it has sold expires after 5 years. Would be great to clarify this as we often have hunters wanting heli access to our huts

5. Goat Control

Andy asked if DOC could supply a list (in priority), the areas that need ground pest control work on goats, the NZDA club would love the opportunity to arrange a club trip and be part of the solutions

6.RHA ballots

These are really too big and the number of deer in the area could warrant making existing blocks smaller - we would do some work on that and send a proposal to DOC in due course. Lisa noted it does involved consultation with a large number of stakeholders so not easy but doable.

It was also raised by both parties why it was a RHA and only winter only. Would a restricted area be better to allow all year round? Both parties would investigate and discuss next time

7. All were invited to our meeting on the 30th Sept as we were discussing hunting blocks - it will be on zoom if anyone was keen to join that way? Ask for the link

Sub Committees

Great to see volunteers helping with the various sub committees. There are no conditions to belong to any of these, in fact we encourage as many members to help where they can.

These are the following groups and committees we always look for volunteers for

  • Stoat traps and Predator Free Helpers
  • HUNTS course instructors
  • Organising hunting trips
  • Fundraising events (burger stand)
  • Range Committee

Range Committee:-

Our current lease agreement with the range has expired so the range committee will be meeting before the next meeting and report back to the club. In the meantime the range is closed for the NZDA however contact Jono at Reel Hunting if you want to arrange something separately

Stoat Trap line

Simon Brackstone and Dave Rider returned the day before the meeting from a trip to the Greenstone Hut to survey the trap line and to do some general maintenance. The USB charging port was upgraded and the front of the hut repainted.

A motion was put to the floor to pay $350 towards the cost of the helicopter going in (this saved Simon walking in with 60 odd eggs for the traps)
Proposed by Nathan Wise, Seconded by Stephen - Carried

This is the report from Simon

"As David mentioned the keas are trashing our trap line from our main hut all the way to the top of the line. Tipping boxes over, rolling them down hill, ripping the mesh out and eating the eggs. Basically for fun and food.

Within 24 hours of rebaiting them I found that most had been trashed and set off and or eggs eaten.

I went back and removed many of the eggs and re set the traps but they came back and rolled them over again just for fun. The f***ers were following me along the trap line .

Simon"

HUNTS Course Instructors

A very successful HUNTS course was ran over the Winter by Katie and Melissa with the help from Stephen, Shaun and Pete

These take up hours of volunteer time (hence why only once a year) and we're  hoping to have the certificates by the next meeting to issue to those that passed.

Katie, Melissa and Stephen are attending a Firearms range course on Sunday 3rd Oct which is required to be fully signed off as HUNTS instructors.

Secretaries Report:-

  • The Wanaka Ballots open 1st Oct - See website reminder
  • Freeman Burn Project
We have received a $45k grant from the Backcountry Huts Trust. The club is looking to start work on the
Freeman Burn Hut (On the otherside of Lake Manapouri) in early Jan (over a few long weekends) so will be looking for volunteers to help with a total rebuild of the hut.
This will be a huge project but a great chance to meet others in the club and go hunting. We will need members with boats as well as some with building skills (and tools) and labourers too.
  • 3 or 4 people are needed to complete the work at the Upper Spey Hut Names were taken at the meeting and this is due to go ahead Mid Nov
  • A new branch has been established in Alexandra - while they are getting up and running, a number of members from our branch are helping with the set up. If you are keen to join, contact Tony on 027 447 9398
  • The Sika show trip is proving difficult with the current situation in Auckland with Covid so with limited interest, this has been taken off the table as a club trip
  • The A&P show is 15th Jan 2022 and we will need some help for the A&P show fundraiser , more detail in the next meeting and newsletter
  • There was a reminder about the Douglas Score course on the 9th and a motion was put to the floor for the club to cover the costs for this course (normally $90)
Put forward by Stephen Dobinson and seconded by Nathan Wise - Carried
Sharon will arrange a refund of those already paid

Backcountry Trust Update

For the newer members - some info about this Trust: The club with so many builders, works with the Backcountry Trust and applies for grants to do maintenance to DOC huts in some amazing and remote areas. The Upper Spey Hut was reroofed last June.
Club Members volunteer labour for free and in return we get to visit (often by helicopter) remote hunting areas where these huts are located

Treasurers Report:-

Balance to date: $63,380.94

Hut fees: deposited this month $945

Bills to pay:

Roger (treasurer) was away hunting so these will be put to committee and reported next month

Memberships Update:-

Paid up members: 177 have paid *

Still to pay: A large number are still outstanding so work needed to see if they still want to be a member and if not why not

New Members: Welcome to the following new members since July this year

  • Mark Black, Hollee Brookes, Hra Brooks, Blake Brown, Robert Craig-Brown, Lewys Edwards, Callum King, Oliver Knowles, James Macrae, Sam Frizelle, Emma Fuller, and Shaun McKelvie.

*Pete commented and reminded everyone that numbers do count when the NZDA lobby government, if everyone joined their family members for just $5 each we could hit a magic 200 membership
